In 1997, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night changed the face of what we call a Castlevania, leading to half a dozen hand held sequels in its image. But just after, the classic Gameboy saw a new title in the form of a classic prequel. Starring Sonia Belmont, Castlevania Legends sought to put an origin story to the series. But in revitalizing the series, Koji Igarashi felt that the game did not fit his Castlevania time-line, and removed it from the official lore. So, what exactly are we missing, then?

Licensed wrestling games are rarely good. They were typically rushed, sloppy productions designed solely to grab a cheap buck based off of the name value of the World Wrestling Federation (now World Wrestling Entertainment), World Championship Wrestling, and, in the late-1990s, Extreme Championship Wrestling. Sure, there were rare exceptions, such as WCW for the NES or the AKI games (WCW v. NWO World Tour, WCW/NWO Revenge, WWF WrestleMania 2000, and WWF No Mercy), but on the majority, licensed games were usually quite bad and especially frustrating. Fortunately, some companies stepped up to the plate and delivered.

Most of the time, when it comes to the current generation of video games, I feel really old. There’s a lot of things about the current gaming scene that piss me off, and I really wish I could figure out why they did. I think it has something to do with the fondness for the games I played as a youth. As a fan of side-scrolling beat-’em-ups, vertical and horizontal shoot-’em-ups, 2D fighting games, and puzzle games, I really feel like I’m left out of the current generation. Sure, there are a few games that I enjoy, but I often find myself going back to the old staples of my childhood, and I think I’ve found out why…

In 1982, David Hasselhoff climbed into a talking Firebird and made some people boat loads of money. After a four year run, the series hung up the turbo boost and called it a Knight. But like Dracula, this lord of the Knight rose from its grave again and again with a repeated series of failures longer than the line at a German Hasselhoff concert. (Seriously, they love that guy.) One such zombie came out in 1988 for the NES for a Knight of the Living Crap. (Honest, I’ll stop making that pun now.)

We met when we were young, on the move. You told me your name was Final Fantasy. We both knew it was a lie, but it was fun to pretend. You couldn’t have known then that I loved you for who you were, and didn’t need to be anything but yourself. When we settled down, you told me your real name, Secret of Mana, and we became inseparable. You did some things behind my back in Japan, a sequel that never came here, but thanks to some translators and ROM hackers, I was able to enjoy this side of you. And when you became a Legend, you became my one true love. It was because of this, I was blinded to all the signs that you would go on to hurt me repeatedly.
I ramble on about a game series I loved as a child, and wonder where my love for it went, if you so wish to share with me.
