I just gave the Audiosurf demo a try on STEAM. It’s being called a puzzle/rhythm hybrid. You pick song amidst your iTunes or other assorted MP3 collection, and it becomes a track of colored blocks along a three lane track.
Under your hover car is a grid (7×3 at first, though that can change with different cars) that the collected blocks fall into (one column for each lane), and your goal is to dodge some blocks, pick up others, and make chains of 3 or more of the same color in whatever shape you can muster, which will cause them to disappear and turn into points, ala your usual puzzle classics.
Warmer colors are worth more points (red is the most, blue the least, etc). The track slopes downward and faster during more intense parts of the song, offering up more warm blocks, while sloping upward and slower with cooler colored blocks during the calmer parts.
There’s also other cars that play differently, such as a play mode where you only have two block types: colored ones you want and grey ones you don’t. The full version even seems to have twin, two-player co-op ships, though I’m curious as to the workings of that. I imagine it involves punching your idiot friend a lot when they botch your combos.
At the moment, the only thing keeping me on the fence as to dropping the $10 for the full version is that this really feels like something I’d want to play on the TV in the living room, rather than at my PC. I still want my full PC MP3 collection at the game’s disposal, but the gameplay itself feels like I should have a controller in my hands and a soft couch to my back. The mouse and keyboard controls are solid. They’re just not… right. If you’re one of those sorts with a PC home entertainment system and just happen to have a gamepad rigged for mouse controls with the stick, then why the fuck don’t you have this game yet?
What are people saying about "Audiosurf (PC/STEAM)"?

BlinderGuardian Re: Audiosurf (PC/STEAM) I played it a while ago. It is a great game. Creative. |

RanmaSolo Re: Audiosurf (PC/STEAM) I bust it out about once a month and try to find whatever the fastest song I can is. And while Metal is good for that, the best seems to be J-Pop with some electronica in it. So remixes especially. The changes in pace and fast beats get that thing going fucking crazy at times. Oh, hey, I gotta go try it with the Dr. Horrible soundtrack now that I have it. -Mike |
