Perhaps the most plausible matchup in our Faceoff! series to date, featuring "The Italian Stallion " Rocky Balboa stepping into the ring against the star of the hit Punchout! series on the NES, Little Mac. Tale of the tape is behind the cut.

Rocky Balboa The Italian Stallion, pride of Philadelphia, Rocky had an interesting career — a mediocre record against bottom of the barrel fighters until he was plucked out of the gutter by Apollo Creed, Rocky then went onto fight Creed to a split decision loss before knocking him out in the final seconds of the 12th round in their rematch; Balboa has a glaring loss to Clubber Lang on his record, but he also gave Mason Dixon more than he bargained for in his final match, not to mention the fact that he single-handedly ended the Cold War with his knockout of Ivan Drago in Moscow. |

Little Mac This 17-year old, 107 pound superstar from the Bronx had the fairytale career that other fighters can only dream of. Mac fought his way up through the multiple circuits and taking on substantially larger fighters on his way to the way to the top, with his trainer Doc Louis always by his side. This run to the championship includes a victory over the man who dominated Heavyweight boxing during the 1980s, "Iron" Mike Tyson, not to mention victories over men who were literally several times his size.. |

If Little Mac got his teeth knocked out in the match his thoughts would be "I'm Done" where as the only thing running through Rocky's head would be "I'm still breathin' I ain't done yet". Strength with grit can outlast Speed with strategy most of the time. Not to mention there training: Mick's variety of exercises had better results than the alternative; Little Mac chasing a guy on a bike that looks like Carl Winslow from Family Matters. Rocky is the Winnah! |

Since everyone is talking of Rocky's past victories in the past tense, I'm going to assume we're talking about throwing them against each other right now, and in this case, I gotta give the nod to Little Mac. Back when Rocky was starting to talk about retiring, Little Mac was just getting his start. by now, Little Mac is a seasoned veteran, and while Rocky is wily and pretty damn tough for his age, He is still a good 25 years older than Mac, and Mac has a good 20 years of experience under his belt. So in this case, youth (such as it is) and speed wins out over age and experience. |

Would Rocky Balboa have figured out how to beat King Hippo? I think not! Sure, Mac can't take a lot of shots and he doesn't have any power, but he's quick and he's smart. Brains will beat brawn, I think. Plus, he's only 107 pounds and he's fighting heavyweights. Give him a little credit! Plus, if we're counting the Team Awesome stuff, Mac learned ZE UPPERCUT~ from Von Kaiser whereas all Rocky learned from Apollo was the eye of the tiger and homoerotic exercise on the beach. I'll agree that Little Mac has the brains, but he'd have nothing without the smartest damned trainer in all of Nintendo history, Doc Louis. Without him he'd be nothing, he wouldn't know how to beat King Hippo, or even Super Macho Man! And of course he wouldn't have the brains to join the Nintendo Fun Club Today! So since he's got the Doc in his corner I'll say Little Mac, but without him it's Rocky all the way! |
