AbG FACEOFF! #1: Sonic vs. Mario

Everyone has asked this question of their friends… "who would win in a fight between [fictional character] and [another fictional character]?" In this new series here on Attacked by Gorillas, we will make the matchups and let you, the readers, debate who, truly, would win. And what better way to start than a rivalry that has lasted for almost twenty years, icons of the console wars… representing Sega, Sonic the Hedgehog, and representing Nintendo, Mario. Tale of the tape is behind the cut.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG He’s blue, he’s fast, and he’s got an attitude. Sonic was the icon for the in-your-face early-1990s attitude a lot of gamers had. Sonic’s first game was a smash hit that helped launch the Sega Genesis into the public eye and make him an internationally recognized star. With the second game, a sidekick, Tails, was added, and the series became even more popular. While Sega exited the console market and focused mostly on software, Sonic has been their marquee character; Sega’s primary development team is even named for him. While he may have had some games of shaky quality recently, many still fondly look to Sonic as an icon of video gaming. |

MARIO The beloved plumber from Brooklyn and defender of the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario first appeared on the video game scene as "Jumpman", trying to save Pauline from the clutches of that dastardly ape Donkey Kong. After a brief role as a villain in Donkey Kong Junior, Mario became a hero again in Mario Brothers, this time partnered with his brother, Luigi. However, it was the game Super Mario Brothers which turned him into a household name and helped save an industry crippled by mismanagement and oversaturation. Many have tried to duplicate the games he has starred in and few have succeeded. For over 25 years, Mario has been an integral part of the video game revolution. |

After all, missiles and asteroids are one thing, but Mario rockin' a Hammer Brothers suit is a whole different story. I'd still say Kuribo's Shoe is The Greatest Powerup Known To Man (dun dun dunnnnn) simply because of the slightly impossible odds that you'd get the thing. Plus it's a giant green boot you can ride around in. How awesome is that?! |

DrDetroit Re: AbG FACEOFF! #1: Sonic vs. Mario For me, it seems like you can't break it down by what's available in specific games, you have to take the entire range of their abilities into consideration. In this case, I think the power-ups favor Mario because there's a broader range of weapons and possibilities, right? So the question remains, can Sonic's speed counter Mario's offensive variety? The other thing too is that Sonic has a little better defense in general, since he has a chance to recollect rings he loses when he gets hit. I think that would make the odds a little better for him, but I can't sell myself on him. Yeah. I have to go with Mario. |

Deltron zero Re: AbG FACEOFF! #1: Sonic vs. Mario See, even with powerups, though, you have to factor in that Mario has three powerups that might trump SuperSonic. They are... - The P-Wing from Super Mario Brothers 3. - The yellow cape from Super Mario World. - And, as Axel will tell you, I may be a bit biased here, but Kuribo's Shoe from Super Mario Brothers 3. Otherwise known as the powerup that I freak out over when I acquire. ^_^ I think the cape especially lets Mario beat sonic, but I'm not so sure that it lets him beat supersonic. Mario might even need the invincibility star for that because as it was said... we all know how much super sonic pwns

But... remember.. the game was always called... SUPER MARIO.... BROTHERS. Not just Super mario. Fuck that lil midget plumber. Luigi was the fucking man. With that being said, Sonic... well he was fast and shit..and didnt need mushrooms. SAY NO TO DRUGS KIDS! |
