Good evening! It’s Sunday night, football’s on, and I’ve got a rant for you all. First, the backstory- courtesy of Gizmodo:

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/play-it-again%2C-mario/unofficial-wii-dvd-playback-now-available-requires-modded-wii-291060.php

And now, the rant behind the jump:

So, I know what you’re thinking besides, "OMG why you has a Wii?" It’s more along the lines of, "Ugh, what’s the big deal? If someone didn’t brick their Wii thanks to Nintendo’s latest system update, they can play DVDs on it now! Isn’t that great?"

Yes, yes, Gorilla Fodder- it would be… but is it really necessary? If I didn’t already own more than a few gadgets I could watch DVDs on, then I could see the need for such a function, but it’s not like Nintendo absolutely needs to keep up with the Joneses this time out. They’ve said that it’s not their intention to have the Wii do all this wonderful all-purpose entertainment stuff, yet people still continue to rant and rave and use the power of anonimity on the internet to send hate Nintendo’s way each and every time the Big N tells folks something along the lines of, "No, we’re not going to do that right now. Eventually, it’s a possibility, but for now? No." Folks get all bent out of shape and act like Nintendo kicked their dog in the balls and say they’re behind the times. Nintendo does something else to make a few gamers angry, and the cycle repeats itself. Is it really that important? Do we really need this "uber machine" from Nintendo so badly, or are people still miffed that the Sony/Nintendo deal from the 16/32 bit era fell through and we got the PSX instead of a Nintendo system that used CDs as a media format before 2001?

Who knows.

Now, I’m no Nintendo apologist; I’m just busy wondering if this is really an issue that needs to be a big deal in the gaming world. How about, I don’t know… some more original IPs, or not as many sequels? Even though I like to shoot things, are all these damned FPSes vital to gaming as a whole? Is Sega gonna ever make a worthwhile 2D Sonic game that I won’t have to buy a handheld for? Will Capcom ever make an original fighter again? I can figure out lots of other things to wonder about in gaming rather than whether or not my Wii plays DVDs. Now, if Nintendo does eventually make the Wii DVD compatible in a legit fashion, hooray for them; people will cheer. But if they don’t, is it really a bad thing?

What are people saying about "Like Freddie Mercury, They Want It All"?

Wow... I actually had no idea that people were being this torn up about the fact that the Wii won't be playing DVD's as a basic feature.

I mean, I agree: Why do you need your video game console to be a DVD player when most people have a stand alone DVD player besides? Is it that important that you need to skip those two or three steps of switicing the inputs after you finish watching the movie to go back to playing games? "Ok, Hudson Hawk is finished, what a great movie. GEMMEBACKTOZELDA!"

Gamers find reason to complain about anything (and yes, I'm aware of the metaness of that statement).  I never understood why having the ability to watch DVDs on the same system as you can play games on is such a big deal.  Yeah, it's nice for consolidation of resources, but seriously, is it really necessary?

Personally, I would also like my console to be a microwave as well.  And while we're at it, let's just have it play PC games too.  And maybe a mini-fridge tossed in wouldn't be a bad idea.  An ash try would be handy, as well as a cassete player, a Swiss Army knife grinder, a bellows, a small V-Twin engine (so I could drive it to work), wireless controllers that also act as hand warmers, a dryer, a pooper-scooper, a vaccume and an automatic porn downloader would all be wonderful additions to my future console.
I hope Sony's got their collective eye on this site.

Re: Like Freddie Mercury, They Want It All

It's never something I, personally, "expected" from a console.  It was a selling point for the PS2, yes.  I didn't own a DVD player or a PSX at the time.  In my mind, that was basically what I was buying.  I wouldn't take interest in any actual PS2 titles until some time after.

Now, I have a PSX, PS2, and DVD Player all in one.  None of those features are of interest to me in a PS3, and so I really have very little desire to get one, nor do I care if any other console can play a DVD.

I don't think the all-in-one and backwards compatibility really caters to the person who's going to own every console and buy the bleeding edge games.  These features play best for families on a budget.  For this, the Wii probably fits the bill the best.  It can surf the internet, which is good for families not able to afford a computer, or maybe just have an eMachine rotting in the corner.  It plays Gamecube games, which means they can fill out their collection with last-gen used titles for much cheaper (most of the lesser off families I knew were always a console generation behind, because you could find lots of games for really cheap).  And when you look at the price tag compared to just these features, it looks really appetizing to someone who doesn't already have them.  The PS3 offers Blue-Ray, but that's not something that target market gives a damn about yet.  Not until their local Blockbuster is 50% Blue-Ray (which I suspect will never happen) will that matter.  Not to mention its price tag turns off this demographic entirely.
